Holyhead Breakwater

Postby g.h.jones on Wed Jan 14, 2009 12:30 pm

Have you seen the latest proposals from Stena Line on the future of the Holyhead Breakwater?
There are three proposals that have been sujested by a company which has set out the consultation paper.
1, To alow the breakwater to colapse naturarly and become just a heap of rubble.
2. To carry out minimum maintainance on a need to repair basis after any storm damage.
3, To varry out a proper and regular maintainance program as was thecase in the past.
I have written to the company stating that for the last twekve years the Breakwater has been totaly devoid of any maintainance, an has only ocationaly had repairs carried out when abseloutely neccesary.
We as an angling club would like to see a programe that would combinr 2 and three of above, and to ensure the future upkeep of this very valuable assett hat is a the Breakwater.
Bee glad to here from anyone with ideas.
The BBreakwater has been used for angling since it was built, and as access has been availoable for angling over the past few years, i,m sure you will agree that to lose this venue would be a trjedy, especialy o he many disabled anglers that use it.

Holyhead Breakwater

Postby Norman on Wed Jan 14, 2009 3:40 pm

Holyhead Sailing Club are currently in consultation with Stena line/ Conigaur , a new company set up to develop the harbour.
They have talked about completely re-developing the marina and inner harbour, to include cutting the existing harbour in half with a new breakwater (from the middle of the existing breakwater to the middle of Newery beach) reclaiming acres of land, and building hundreds of new houses, a hotel and a 1000 berth marina. These plans would certainly impact on the local’s abilities to use the breakwater and harbour (for whatever reason) possibly creating a gated community for privileged owners of these proposed marina properties, most of whom would not be local, turning Holyhead into another Abersoch!
I feel that the local community groups need to unite with regard to these proposals in an effort to pool the limited information provided by Conigaur, and show a united front against these “Out of town” developers. This would enable the people of Holyhead to secure something for Us, as opposed to being pushed aside so that the likes of Daffydd Sam (the man behind the Beuamaris Marina disaster and the Port Penrhyn development and conigaur).
It seems from the information you have provided that you have only been given the details that they wanted you to have, and that when they come along with a possible solution i.e. the harbour development that will save the breakwater – we all jump for joy !!!!
